Kampung Air Panas Hot Spring, Gerik is the spring that gave Kampung Air Panas, just south-west of Gerik in Hulu Perak, its name. Geologists recorded the water at 45°C in the 1990s, and the village's own Facebook page mentions two old hot spring pools.

There is no developed bathing site, no ticket counter and no recent visitor report that we could find. This page suits people passing through Gerik on the East-West Highway who are curious about the village name, and anyone tracking Perak's lesser-known springs. Start at Masjid Al-Taqwa Kampung Air Panas and ask residents for the two old pools: their exact position is not mapped.

What is known

The spring is listed as "Kg. Ayer Panas, Gerik" with a surface temperature of 45°C in a national survey by Samsudin and colleagues (1997), reproduced in Mohd Hariri Arifin's 2017 USM PhD thesis. Arifin's distribution map of Peninsular Malaysia's hot springs, republished in Warta Geologi in 2022, plots it as spring no. 10, "Kampung Air Panas, Gerik", at the same spot as the village on OpenStreetMap. We found no published water chemistry for this spring.

The village Facebook page describes two old hot spring pools, said to have been a resting stop for a Siamese prince (anak Raja Siam). Beyond that we found no photos, reviews or news, so we cannot say what the pools look like today, whether anyone still bathes in them, or whether they sit on private land.

On the map

OpenStreetMap places Kampung Air Panas about 3 km south-west of Gerik town centre in a straight line; the village Facebook page gives 6 km from town, which is probably the road distance. Masjid Al-Taqwa Kampung Air Panas is in the village, and a stream named Sungai Sira Panas runs through it. Our pin marks the village, not the pools. Do not confuse it with Kampung Sira Panas Hot Spring, a separate 65°C survey record about 10 km east of Gerik.

What to expect

There are no listed facilities, opening hours or fees. At 45°C the source is hotter than most people can sit in for long, so if you find the water, test it with your hand first.

Getting there

Gerik sits at the junction of Federal Route 4 (the East-West Highway to Jeli and Kelantan) and Federal Route 76, which runs south to Kuala Kangsar and north to Pengkalan Hulu. Kampung Air Panas (postcode 33300) is about 3 km south-west of the town centre in a straight line, roughly 6 km by village road. Head for Masjid Al-Taqwa Kampung Air Panas, then ask residents for the pools. No public transport serves the village directly.

Before you go

  • Ask at Masjid Al-Taqwa or a kampung shop where the two old pools are and whether visitors are welcome before walking onto anyone's land.
  • Test the water with your hand first; the source was recorded at 45°C.
  • Don't expect a changing room or toilet; come already dressed for the water and bring a towel and a bag for your rubbish.
  • Dress modestly in the village, as you would anywhere in rural Hulu Perak.
  • Gerik town has the nearest shops and petrol, so stock up before heading out.
