Jeli Hot Spring is a roadside hot spring at Kampung Kolam Air Panas, Kampung Lawar, on the East-West Highway (Jalan Gerik–Jeli) about 15 km west of Jeli town. The water runs through three cemented pools, hottest at the source and cooler downstream.

The newest visitor accounts we found are from 2011, when some facilities were already damaged, so the current state of the pools is unknown. For drivers crossing between Kelantan and Perak it is a short detour: the pools sit about 200 m below the highway, down a steep tarred access road.

The pools

The Geological Survey's 1997 inventory lists the spring at Batu Melintang, Jeli at 52°C at the surface. That is the only published temperature; nobody has published pool readings.

A 2011 visitor account describes three pools named like siblings. Kolam sulung (the eldest) sits on the source and is the hottest; people boil chicken and quail eggs in it. Kolam tengah (the middle pool) is cooler and is the one people bathe in. Kolam bongsu (the youngest) is the coolest and was recommended for children. A small bridge crosses the pools, and the banks are cemented.

The water is high in sulphur. A 2021 study, cited in a 2025 review of Malaysian geothermal research, classed it as magnesium bicarbonate type. The same study also covered Tok Bok Hot Spring in Machang.

Facilities and condition

In 2011 the site had a surau, dining tables, shelters, walkways and steps. The same writer noted that some facilities were already damaged and that the place drew far fewer visitors than other hot springs. Another 2011 post said the facilities were complete but asked why so few people came.

As of October 2026 we found no recent reviews, no published fee and no opening hours. Bring your own water and food, and be ready to turn around if the pools are drained or dirty.

Other hot water around Jeli

University theses have mapped this spring for geotourism (2013), seismic refraction (2013), structural geology (2016) and resistivity (2016). A 2017 USM thesis also describes hot water at Sungai Belimbing and inside the access tunnel of the Pergau hydroelectric station in the same district. The tunnel springs are inside a power station, and we found no visitor information for Sungai Belimbing.

Getting there

The pools are at Kampung Kolam Air Panas, beside the East-West Highway (FT4, Jalan Gerik–Jeli). From Jeli town, take the highway west towards Gerik for about 15 km (a 2011 blog put it at 25 km and 20 minutes). The pools are about 200 m below the main road, down a short, steep, tarred access road. In 2011 a Jeli–Gerik bus passed around 11am, but only one way; that timetable is unverified today, so plan on driving.

Before you go

  • Bring eggs: the source pool (kolam sulung) is where people boil them, and it is too hot to bathe in.
  • Bathe in the middle pool and keep children in the lowest, coolest pool.
  • Bring drinking water and snacks; no visitor account mentions food stalls on site.
  • Rinse off with clean water afterwards if sulphur water bothers your skin.
  • The access road drops steeply from the highway. Check your brakes and take it slowly after rain.

Can you boil eggs at Jeli Hot Spring?

Yes. Visitors boil eggs in the first pool at the source, which is the hottest of the three.

Is Jeli Hot Spring still maintained?

Unknown. Facilities were already partly damaged in 2011, and we found no recent reviews or council updates as of October 2026.

How far is Jeli Hot Spring from Jeli town?

About 15 km west along the East-West Highway towards Gerik. A 2011 blog says 25 km and 20 minutes by car.
